Scarlatti: gambler, jester, genius
Timothy Roberts (harpsichord)
Among the great 18th-century composers, Domenico
Scarlatti is the least well-known. Born in Naples in
1685, he grew up in the shadow his famous father
Alessandro. He left Italy for England but ended up
at the Spanish Court at Seville and Madrid. In this
informal recital of Scarlatti’s music, Timothy Roberts
chooses his favourite sonatas, and intersperses them
with readings, commentary, musings on his own recent arrival in Iberia
and on Spain as an enduring land of new perspectives and possibilities
for the musician.
